There are no red lines Washington won’t cross for a deal | News in Depth
As the U.S. midterm elections draw closer, President Donald Trump appears to be acting less and less rationally. He is not only trying to blame Ukraine for high oil prices, but has also struck a deal with Vladimir Putin that, in practice, helps finance Russia’s war machine and lends legitimacy to its criminal actions in Ukraine.
Reports are also emerging that Vladimir Putin wants talks, but neither with Ukraine nor with Europe. The Russian leader would reportedly prefer to discuss Ukraine with his Chinese and U.S. counterparts instead. In News in Depth, TVP World Europe Editor Marcin Zaborowski argues that the possibility of some kind of agreement being reached over the heads of Ukraine and Europe cannot be ruled out.
At the same time, questions are growing over whether Washington still has any red lines when it comes to relations with Moscow. Could a new great-power bargain be taking shape? Is Europe being sidelined from decisions that will directly affect its security? And what would a settlement negotiated without Ukraine mean for the future of the continent?
