Russia’s cyberwar on Ukraine: what Europe must learn | Anatomy of Disinformation
In this special edition of Anatomy of Disinformation, recorded at the Warsaw Security Forum, Maia Mazurkiewicz explores how cyberattacks and disinformation operations are increasingly interconnected and what Europe can learn from Ukraine’s experience.
Our guests Ieva Ilves, a cybersecurity adviser, and Vitaly Balashov, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation discuss how Russia’s approach has evolved from subtly influencing public opinion to combining cyber operations, attacks on critical infrastructure, and efforts to undermine trust in governments, institutions, and the media.
The conversation examines why cybersecurity requires long-term investment in technology, expertise and cooperation between governments, businesses and civil society. Drawing on Ukraine’s experience, Balashev explains why countries must prepare their infrastructure before a crisis hits, while Yilvas highlights the importance of building resilience, communicating honestly, and recognizing that cyber threats affect individuals and small businesses, as well as governments.
