Kumamoto quake: Multiple deaths at mall, many buildings and infrastructure damaged

The Japanese government has ordered some 300,000 people to evacuate to relief centres and shelters after a massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the country’s southern Kumamoto prefecture at 4.27pm on Tuesday (July 28), knocking out power to thousands of homes, rupturing roads and injuring at least 50 people, including some trapped inside a partially collapsed shopping mall.

Authorities said several people were presumed dead at the AEON shopping mall following an explosion reported at the building.
