China has erupted after Australia sailed a warship through the Taiwan Strait and upgraded its navy fleet.
Australia joined its counterparts from Canada, The Philippines and the US for a freedom of navigation exercise, and Australia sailed a warship through the sensitive Taiwan Strait.
The next day, Penny Wong and Richard Marles met with their Japanese counterparts in Tokyo to reaffirm the alliance between Australia and Japan.
Beijing delivered outrage in the form of lead editorials and threats.
It comes after China held an enormous military parade marking 80 years since the end of World War II, with a full display of weapons.
