At least one dead as Hurricane Lala slams Hawaii with violent flash flooding
Lala weakened to a tropical storm off Hawaii’s shores early Sunday morning, but forecasters still warned of flooding, mudslides and dangerous surf conditions amid continued torrential rains and high winds on the island chain.
The storm battered the Big Island of Hawaii’s southern coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday, before the National Weather Service downgraded it to a tropical storm. The northern edge of Lala’s eyewall brushed South Point, on the southern tip of the Big Island, with the center of the storm remaining offshore, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.
Conditions are expected to deteriorate Sunday on Oahu, the most populated Hawaiian island. Forecasters warned that nearly 3 feet of rain could also fall on some parts of the Big Island, with more widespread totals of 10 to 20 inches. Eastern Maui could see 8 to 12 inches, and other islands in Hawaii could get 4 to 6 inches of rain from Lala.
