Hurricane Lala Pummels Hawaii With Heavy Rain and Winds
Residents on Hawaii’s Big Island sheltered in place as Hurricane Lala brought heavy rain, powerful winds and dangerous coastal conditions. The Category 1 storm was located about 30 miles southwest of South Point late Saturday morning, with more than 44,000 customers reportedly without power. Officials warned of life-threatening flash flooding, landslides, high surf and storm surge, with rainfall totals potentially reaching 20 inches in parts of the Big Island and Maui.
