What Did Newsday Uncover About This Farmingville Fire Comissioner?
A Farmingville fire commissioner does not live in the district he serves, as required by New York State law, according to property tax records reviewed by Newsday.
Edward Stewart III has claimed volunteer firefighter property tax exemptions on a Holtsville home since the 2018-19 tax year.
State law requires fire commissioners to reside in the districts they represent.
Stewart is also named in a lawsuit alleging Farmingville fire officials altered surveillance footage to cover up an incident involving a woman who was allegedly struck by an SUV in the department’s parking lot.
Stewart and other fire officials did not respond to Newsday’s requests for comment.
