Unlike Orbán, Magyar uses his powers to reestablish rule of law | News In Depth

Within three months of taking office, Hungarian prime minister Péter Magyar is speeding through legislation, including constitutional changes and appointments to high positions, possible thanks to the three-thirds majority his party, Tisza, holds in Parliament. But this has led to accusations that this style of governing is exactly like that of his predecessor, Viktor Orbán.

“The counterargument to that is that the intentions are different. Orbán used those methods to dismantle the rule of law in Hungary. And Péter Magyar is using those methods to try to rebuild it,” Stuart Dowell, TVP World’s Political Editor, said, pointing out that Magyar is under pressure to enact the necessary reforms by the end of August in order to receive the €10 billion out of €16 billion in EU funds which have so far been held back.

“But there must come a time in government when that way of acting very, very quickly ceases to be an advantage and becomes a burden,” Dowell said, adding that the public will assess Magyar’s actions based on the results they bring. “If his approach brings results by releasing the money from Europe (…) then probably people will overlook this kind of thing. But once things start going badly for them, it makes [Magyar] an easy target.”
