Ukraine hammers Russian navy base in Novorossiysk | Ukraine Brief

Ukraine unleashed a massive attack on the vital Russian port city of Novorossiysk overnight Wednesday, including with jet-powered drones, Neptune cruise missiles, and naval drones. The city houses vessels from Russia’s Black Sea fleet, which is traditionally stored in Crimea but relocated owing to the threat of Ukrainian attacks. Reports suggest that two grain terminals in Novorossiysk, as well as military and cargo ships, were also damaged.

Despite the overnight barrage against Novorossiysk, Kyiv has reportedly agreed not to strike infrastructure belonging to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in the city.

According to the Financial Times, citing Ukrainian officials, U.S. Vice President JD Vance requested that Ukraine refrain from targeting the port in a late-July phone call with President Zelenskyy.

Meanwhile, at least nine people have been killed and over 70 were wounded in Russia’s latest wave of attacks against Ukraine, with civilian areas heavily targeted.

To discuss this and more, Ukraine Brief’s host Ashim Kumar is joined by Myroslava Gongadze, Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council.
