President Donald Trump says Israeli forces are in the process of withdrawing and redeploying from parts of Lebanon under a new US-brokered framework. Speaking alongside Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House, Trump praised the agreement and predicted that Aoun could become one of the Middle East’s most important leaders. The first phase establishes “pilot zones” where Israeli troops pull back and the Lebanese Armed Forces move in. However, Israel says the IDF will retain a presence inside a 10-kilometre security zone for “as long as necessary,” while preserving its claimed right to remove perceived threats. Hezbollah has rejected the agreement as futile and humiliating. Aoun is expected to press Washington for a complete Israeli withdrawal and increased support for the Lebanese army as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continues. Watch.
