Taiwan has concluded its largest annual military exercises simulating scenarios of a possible People’s Liberation Army (PLA) attack. The 42nd edition of the Han Kuang drills included testing the military’s ability to counter a PLA blockade in the western Pacific. Other scenarios rehearsed included a late-night escape from the presidential office by the self-ruled island’s leader William Lai Ching-te, and a severe blockage of the island’s 4G and 5G networks. This year’s exercise came as Beijing steps up military pressure through grey-zone operations, large-scale drills and expanded coastguard patrols around Taiwan. Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification. Most countries, including the US, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, but Washington is opposed to any attempt to take it by force.
