Syrskyi’s replacement marks a victory for the Maidan generation | Roland Freudenstein

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced late on Tuesday that General Mykhailo Drapatyi will replace Oleksandr Syrskyi as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The move appears to have somewhat placated the protests which erupted following the dismissal of popular defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose firing was reportedly motivated by his conflict with Syrskyi.

“I think this was fantastic news today. It’s above all a victory of Ukrainian democracy, not just civil society, but democracy in general,” Roland Freudenstein, co-founder of the Brussels Freedom Hub, told TVP World, calling Syrskyi’s removal “a move against the corrupt networks personified by former head of the presidential administration, Andriy Yermak.”

“And maybe (Syrskyi) wasn’t directly part of it, but he tolerated some of those corrupt maneuvers,” he added.

“And the other aspect, of course, is that this is a generational victory of what I would call the Maidan generation,” Freudenstein said, referring to “the people who entered into public life, who became politicized in the protests 12 years ago against Yanukovych and against the pro-Russian Ukrainian government.”

“Both Fedorov and Drapatyi personify that generation. Whereas Syrskyi was very much part of the generation from the 1990s that still had some of their roots even in the Soviet era.”

“This is on so many levels good news,” said the co-founder of the Brussels Freedom Hub.

Join TVP World’s Maciej Mikos and his guest as they discuss the upcoming meeting between diplomacy chiefs of the U.S. and Russia, and whether Ukraine will be on the table, whether Ukraine can successfully force Putin to choose between continuing the war and losing power at home, and whether the former defense minister Fedorov will eventually become a challenger to Zelenskyy in the future.
