Spain mourns after high-speed train crash kills at least 68 people

A high-speed train collision south of Madrid has killed 68 people and injured dozens more, with the toll likely to rise, authorities said.

The second such accident to strike Spain this year will raise fresh questions about the country’s rail safety, with the transport minister speaking of an “error” and “inexplicable circumstances” that led to the collision.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the “whole country is grieving” and Spain would observe three days of mourning from Thursday, conceding it was “not acceptable” that two high-speed collisions could happen within months.

On 18 January, a train derailed in Adamuz, near Córdoba, on the same high-speed line, killing 46 people.
