Former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern’s new job at The University of Sydney has sparked backlash in her home country, where some locals still resent the economic fallout from her government’s Covid response.
Ms Ardern, who moved to Sydney earlier this year, said Tuesday that she was “delighted” to become a professor of practice at the prestigious institution.
The university’s vice-chancellor and president, Professor Mark Scott, said Ms Ardern’s leadership had “demonstrated that empathy and resolve do not compete with one another; each can strengthen the other”.
“For our students, the opportunity to learn from Dame Jacinda is exceptional,” he continued.
“They will meet not only a former prime minister but a thoughtful teacher with a great deal to share about public leadership and service.
