Riots prompt takeaway alcohol ban in Alice Springs to relieve police pressure | ABC NEWS
The Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says last night’s “rioting behaviour” required an “enormous police response”.
Mrs Finocchiaro announced that there’ll be no takeaway alcohol in the Alice Springs community today.
The unrest follows the alleged murder of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby.
“As a result of that behaviour we saw police, firies and ambulances attacked. Attacks on frontline workers are never acceptable,” she says.
“And while we appreciate and understand that people are very angry and grieving, there is never an excuse or acceptability of violence as a response.”
Mrs Finocchiaro says she doesn’t want last night to define the community, who have otherwise been very supportive of one another in the past week.
“We are very hopeful that was an isolated incident and should not define what was an incredible community effort this week.”
She says tomorrow there’ll be limited takeaway between 11am and 2pm, Sunday is “already highly restricted”, and Monday and Tuesday are “already grog-free days”.
