Why Alice Springs riots broke out

A riot erupted in Alice Springs as an angry mob of 400 people gathered outside Alice Springs Hospital, where a man suspected of abducting and murdering a young girl was being treated for critical injuries.

A police car was set on fire, four ambulances damaged and a Shell service station was smashed up in the mayhem, which left five emergency service workers injured.

Authorities confirmed Jefferson Lewis, 47, was flown to Darwin due to “safety concerns”.

The disappearance of Kumanjayi Little Baby, 5, sparked one of the largest searches in the Northern Territory.

But the riots that followed her discovery ran deeper than outrage.
