Reed Dance | Royal Reed Dance underway in eMashobeni Royal Palace oPhongolo

Every September in KwaZulu-Natal, the Royal Reed Dance brings Zulu culture to life. It’s a colorful and lively event where thousands of young girls come together, dressed in traditional outfits, to dance and present reeds to the Zulu king. This act shows respect, purity, and honors the role of women in Zulu traditions.

More than just a celebration, the Reed Dance is a big step in a girl’s journey to womanhood. Young girls travel from all over the country to join in.
While they’re there, older women guide them, sharing life lessons and teaching about Zulu customs, especially the importance of staying celibate until marriage.

The event encourages girls to respect their bodies and helps them prepare for their future as women. SABC News Reporter Simphiwe Makhanya is watching that story for us and joins us live from Emashobeni Royal Palace in oPhongolo
