A terrifying landslide crashed into homes, leaving residents feared trapped under rubble in China.

Aerial footage shows the aftermath, with clouds of dust billowing from the debris following the disaster in Chongqing this morning.

Community workers spotted falling rocks in Hanjia subdistrict, Pengshui, at around 8 am local time and immediately issued a warning.

Authorities quickly evacuated more than 60 residents from the five- and six-storey buildings, which had shops on the ground floor, near the Wujiang Third Bridge.

However, the landslide struck during the evacuation, leaving some people trapped beneath the debris. The exact number of those buried has yet to be confirmed.

Local media reported that eight people had already been rescued as search operations continued for other trapped victims. Two of those rescued suffered serious injuries.

The China Anneng Chongqing rescue team dispatched 100 personnel and 50 sets of specialist equipment for engineering rescue, detection and search operations at the site.

Officials also went door-to-door, urging locals living in dangerous areas to evacuate immediately, moving them to nearby temporary shelters where food and accommodation were provided.
