The Office of the Public Protector has this afternoon released a report into food safety in Gauteng’s informal sector.
Adv Kholeka Gcaleka found that municipalities failed to enforce laws after complaints of systemic failures, triggered by last year’s spaza food poisoning deaths.
On the Naledi case where 5 children died, the PP says late sampling means lab results can’t clear the shop.
She’s now recommending a technical committee, more funding, and SAPS action on fraud.
Remedial action includes a technical committee and SAPS investigations.
