New party could pick up the support of disaffected center-right voters | News in Depth
Poland’s largest opposition and former ruling party has split, with the splinter faction of former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki and dozens of MPs ejected. It is not yet clear whether they will form a new party. But if they do, can the new formation, expected to represent center-right, pro-market, soft-conservative ideas, attract voters?
“There’s an attractive market segment to occupy. Mateusz Morawiecki’s case is that in the center ground of Polish politics after the collapse or disappearance of the Third Way, which in 2023 got 14%,” said Stuart Dowell, TVP World’s Political Editor. “And now the two parties that made it up are in the low single figures. There’s room to attract some of those voters.”
“Things are going quite well for the right,” Dowell said, quoting polling figures that give all right-wing parties more support put together than the center and left. “But this fragmentation that’s going on—fragmentation sounds like a negative word; you could call it even market segmentation—each of those parties is communicating effectively and directly to different groups of voters on the right. And they’re gaining voters for that.”
Join News in Depth’s host, Ashim Kumar, and his guest as they explore the reasons behind the split, how much support Morawiecki’s prospective party can hope to get, and whether the Polish right is capable of translating its growing support into a victory at the polls and, more importantly, a coalition.
