National Address | I will not resign: Pres Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will not resign from his office despite calls from a number of opposition parties for him to do so. This after the Constitutional Court judgment last Friday, which found that rule 129I governing Parliament’s impeachment process is inconsistent with the Constitution and that the Independent Panel report on the Phala Phala matter, must be referred to the Impeachment Committee. This followed a legal challenge by the EFF and ATM, which argued that the National Assembly acted irrationally in 2022, when it decided not to appoint a committee to look into the recommendations of the independent panel. The panel chaired by Former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo found that Ramaphosa had a prima facie case to answer regarding foreign currency stolen from his Phala Phala farm in 2020. Ramaphosa says he will be taking the Independent Panel report on judicial review.
