Naming Ukrainian army unit after Pole murderers a “foolish move” | Michael R. Carpenter

Tensions between Warsaw and Kyiv flared up again over historical grievances, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a unit of the Ukrainian army after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, or UPA – a World War II nationalist formation responsible for the genocide of 100,000 Poles.

“To be perfectly frank with you, I think it’s a foolish move,” Michael R. Carpenter, Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told TVP World. “President Zelenskyy is well aware of the history of the UPA. (…) And of course, whenever Poles and Ukrainians fight over historical memory. Russia is the one that benefits.”

Join our host, Diana Skaya, and her guest, as they discuss what may have motivated Kyiv’s decision, as well as who will represent the EU should it join the negotiations to end the Russo-Ukrainian war.
