Kimmel responds to ‘expectant widow’ joke backlash
Late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel has responded to calls for him to be fired following a recent joke about US first lady Melania Trump looking like an “expectant widow”.
The joke was broadcast before the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, where a shooter allegedly opened fire as the first lady and her husband, US President Donald Trump, were in attendance.
Cole Tomas Allen has been charged over the incident, and is potentially facing a life sentence in prison if found guilty.
Melania said it was “time for ABC to take a stand” against the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and that he shouldn’t have the opportunity to continue hosting the program.
Kimmel has responded that there was a misunderstanding about the joke, which he says was about how Trump is “almost 80 and she’s younger than I am”.
