Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has pushed back against calls from US President Donald Trump to have him fired, saying his joke about First Lady Melania Trump had been misinterpreted and was not a “call to assassination”.
Today’s public spat has extended the President’s ugly history with Kimmel over his position as a powerful voice in the country’s cultural lexicon.
Kimmel has now addressed the latest controversy head-on during the opening monologue of his program Jimmy Kimmel Live!, referring to remarks he made on April 23 in a parody segment tied to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
He said his quip that Melania Trump had “a glow like an expectant widow” was aimed at the age gap between the couple and not at the growing worldwide discontent at the polarising leader.
