Japan recorded its first officially designated kokushobi or “cruelly hot day” on Wednesday when temperatures in three central cities exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104°F). The new warning level was introduced in April to alert the public to the most dangerous heat. Officials have also urged people to take extra precautions during the continuing heatwave.
