Jair Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years in jail
Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years behind bars.
The Supreme Court found him guilty of plotting to remain in power after his election loss in 2022.
The ruling is a setback to the populist, far-right movement spearheaded by Mr Bolsonaro.
He becomes the first former president to be convicted of attacking democracy.
Mr Bolsonaro is a close ally of US President Donald Trump, who has given a positive character assessment of his former counterpart.
