Iran’s Ship Hijacked In High-Seas Drama; Fate Of 23 Crew Members Unknown; EU Agency Issues Alert

An Iranian vessel has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia, raising fresh alarm over maritime security as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to cast a shadow over the wider region. The hijacked vessel was carrying 23 people, including 21 Iranian fishermen and two Somali security guards. Their fate remains unknown. According to maritime security officials, 12 armed pirates seized the vessel in waters off northeastern Somalia, between Bandar Bayla and Hafun.

But the biggest concern goes beyond the hijacking itself. The European Union’s Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean has warned that the captured Iranian vessel could be used as a so-called ‘mother ship’, potentially serving as a launchpad for further pirate attacks on commercial shipping.
