Iran may cost Trump the midterms, but Kyiv won’t benefit from GOP loss | Michael Carpenter
Trump’s Iran military adventure continues to drive up domestic prices at the pump and inflation, which will likely negatively affect the Republican Party’s performance in midterms this November. With the White House’s peace mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine seemingly favoring Moscow, would the GOP’s loss of control of Congress bring hope for a shift in Washington’s policy toward Kyiv?
“If it’s just the House of Representatives that comes into Democratic leadership and not the Senate, then the consequences will be modest,” Michael Carpenter, Senior Fellow with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told TVP World, saying that the Representatives could possibly investigate the failures of Trump’s foreign policy.
“But foreign policy is made by the executive. So even if both houses of Congress were to fall to Democratic control, it’s unlikely that would shift anything in terms of the administration’s foreign policy, at least not in any substantial degree,“ he said, adding that perhaps pro-Ukraine Republicans might feel emboldened to speak out in favor of more robust support of Kyiv.
“But in practical terms, I don’t think it has that much impact,” Carpenter concluded.
