Inquiry into racism towards Indigenous people extends submission deadline
The federal inquiry into racism, hate and violence directed at Indigenous people has extended its submission deadline to 1 June due to an “overwhelming” number of requests from community.
Victorian Labor senator Jana Stewart, a Mutthi Mutthi and Wamba Wamba woman, told NITV News the inquiry has heard how “racism is absolutely taking place from all across the country, whether that be in our schools, in our workplaces or on the street or even online.”
“We know that online in particular is where mob have experienced a real increase, in the hundreds of per cent, of racism … but our exposure to it is also more because we’re more likely to have a device in our hands to open up social media and to see those racist comments as well. So I think the impact on mob has felt … really overwhelming”, she said.
The Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs kicked off its interstate public hearings in Sydney earlier this month and is due to report its findings in September.
