Gen Z Is Staying Home as Long Island Housing Costs Rise
For many Gen Z Long Islanders, moving out of their parents’ homes is becoming harder to afford.
With median home prices reaching $860,000 in Nassau County and $740,000 in Suffolk County in September, young adults are choosing to stay home longer to save money and work toward financial independence.
Some are building their careers and saving for a down payment, while others are struggling to find jobs after college. Experts say rising housing costs, expensive rent and a challenging job market are making it harder for this generation to live on its own.
Newsday spoke with young Long Islanders about why they’re staying home and what it could take for them to move out.
