Eurovision 2026 begins amid protests and boycotts over Israel
Eurovision has begun in Vienna, Austria, with 15 countries, including Israel, taking part in the first semi-final.
This year’s event has been mired in controversy over Israel’s inclusion, with five countries boycotting over the war in Gaza.
Pro-Palestinian protesters have demonstrated in Vienna, while inside the arena chants of “stop the genocide” could be heard as Israel’s entrant Noam Bettan started performing.
But organisers, as well as some fans, are hoping for the focus to return to the music.
