Beijing expands economically across Russia’s border | Eastern Express

China’s growing presence in the Russian Far East is reviving old fears about territory seized from the Qing dynasty by the Russian Empire.

Beijing has little incentive to challenge the border militarily when it can secure resources, transport corridors, and port access through economic cooperation. Russia’s isolation since the invasion of Ukraine has made Chinese investment and trade increasingly difficult for Moscow to resist. The Kremlin still controls the region politically, but its ability to prevent economic dependence is steadily weakening.

In this episode of Eastern Express, host Jonas Rewiński and his guest, Jakub Janda, Director of the European Values Center for Security Policy, examine whether China wants Russia’s eastern territories back or simply wants the advantages that come with controlling their economic future.
