Kasi Hero: How one pharmacist ended dangerous midnight medicine runs in Zonkizizwe

Viwe Moni-Mashego has transformed healthcare access in the Zonkizizwe informal settlement, where elderly residents once risked their lives travelling in darkness to collect vital medication. Despite funding challenges, the determined pharmacist established Zonke-Med Pharmacy, bringing essential medical services directly to the community’s doorstep. Known locally as the “Kasi Hero,” Moni-Mashego goes beyond simply dispensing medication—she runs multiple community programmes that address broader health and social needs. Her work has not only improved medical access but has also enhanced safety and dignity for some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.
