Poland’s Hidden Railways | Pulse of Culture
This week Pulse of Culture boards a train for a journey through one hundred years of Polish railway history, from grand restored stations to forgotten narrow-gauge lines hiding in plain sight just outside Warsaw.
Poland’s railways are celebrating their centenary this year, and the story of how trains have shaped this country is far richer than most people realize. We begin with WARS, the legendary Polish dining car service that became a unique social crossroads on wheels, immortalized in songs and films and carrying echoes of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express.
Next we travel to Iława, where a beautifully restored train station, built in the Prussian architectural style in 1905, tells the layered story of a place that passed through German, Soviet and finally Polish hands, and is now carefully choosing how to present and interpret that turbulent past. And finally, we step off the main lines and onto the Piaseczno-Grójec narrow-gauge railway, one of Poland’s most charming heritage lines running just south of Warsaw.
Once the backbone of local industry and community life is far from forgotten today. Pulse of Culture is a weekly English-language magazine for anyone with a connection to Poland, including tourists, the diaspora, and the simply curious. New episodes are released every Sunday.
