166 Cats Found in Glen Cove Home, Woman Faces Charges

More than 160 cats were discovered inside a Glen Cove home, where authorities say conditions were so hazardous that firefighters needed protective suits to enter.

Alena Horbatko, 54, has been charged with 163 counts of animal cruelty and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Authorities say the home was filled with clutter, cat feces and a strong odor of ammonia.

Of the 166 cats and kittens found, one was already dead and another died on the way to a veterinarian.

Many of the surviving animals suffered from respiratory and eye infections.

The investigation began after Horbatko’s adult daughter contacted authorities out of concern for her younger sister, who was 12 at the time.

Horbatko pleaded not guilty Thursday. Her attorney disputes the prosecution’s portrayal of the case.
