ZANU PF postpones elective congress to 2029
Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party has resolved to amend the constitution to align it with proposed changes to the country’s supreme law, extending presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years.
The party has also postponed its elective congress from 2027 to 2029, a year before President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s extended term is due to end in 2030.
The resolutions were adopted at the party’s National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West province, where the gathering also exposed potential divisions within the party’s leadership.
SABC News correspondent Ephert Musekiwa reports from Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe.
