Xi tells Trump Taiwan could trigger conflict, overshadowing Beijing summit agenda | DW News

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are projecting unity at their high-profile summit in Beijing — but the issue of Taiwan remains a defining fault line.

Behind closed doors, China reportedly warned that mishandling Taiwan could lead to “clashes and even conflicts.” The United States, meanwhile, is sticking to its position. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the topic was raised, saying China “always” brings it up, while Washington reaffirms its stance before moving on.

With the U.S. continuing to supply arms to Taiwan, the summit highlights a delicate balance: cooperation on trade and global crises on one hand, and an unresolved, potentially explosive dispute on the other.
