World Cup: ‘Hand of God’ ball and Pele shirt on display for auction in New York

The match ball from Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England — made famous by the late Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal — is on display at the Fanatics Fest at the Javits Centre in New York.

It is up for auction with a US$2.5mil opening bid, and Heritage Auctions said it could fetch a price comparable to the US$9.2mil paid in 2022 for Maradona’s match-worn shirt from the same game.

At Sotheby’s Sports Week event also in New York, a shirt worn by the late Pele in the 1958 World Cup final has been sold for US$4.9mil, making it the most valuable Pele item ever sold at auction.
