‘Willful negligence’: Trump threatens Canada with higher tariffs over wildfire smoke
US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of not maintaining their forests as the country battles nearly 200 wildfires.
The smoke from Canada’s out-of-control wildfires has reached parts of the US, creating unhealthy air quality ahead of the World Cup final.
“We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their forests and brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“This is willful negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States billions of dollars, which cost of this pollution must, of necessity, be added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying.”
