Who really wants to weaken Europe through migration? | Scott Lucas
Who benefits most from the migration crisis in Ceuta? “There are smuggling networks trying to move migrants across the border,” says Scott Lucas, Professor of American Studies at University College Dublin, for World Talks.
He points out that this was not the first influx of migrants into the Spanish exclave, but it was the largest. The key questions are who benefits from the crisis and what can be done to prevent it from happening again.
According to Lucas, the main political beneficiaries are populist movements that use migration as a tool to win support from voters.
“Russia has been using the issues of migration, asylum seekers and refugees for years to undermine the stability of European societies,” Lucas argues.
He says Alexander Lukashenko has followed a similar strategy. In his view, the Kremlin benefits from the growing popularity of populist parties, many of which show greater understanding toward Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
