White House correspondents’ dinner finally held, Trump mixes jokes with barbs
US President Donald Trump spoke about Iran, took aim at the press, mixing humour with barbs and familiar tropes, and donned a “TRUMP 2028” cap at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on July 24, returning to the event celebrating press freedom three months after a shooting and attempted assassination of government leaders disrupted the original event in April.
Trump, whose administration has often been at odds with the press, started by mostly going along with the warm and relaxed tenor of the evening. But much of the speech took aim at the press who gave him negative reports and his political adversaries.
