What will happen after the Senate’s vote to end the mining ban near the Boundary Waters?

The U.S. Senate this week voted to end a 20-year ban on mining in the Superior National Forest near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The most immediate beneficiary of the new measure is Twin Metals Minnesota, which has proposed an underground copper-nickel mine within the Boundary Waters watershed. Activists and lawmakers who supported the ban reacted with promises to continue their opposition, on grounds that a mine would put the popular outdoors destination at risk.
