Russia’s vast fleet of icebreakers has long supported its claim to dominance in the Arctic.
Western sanctions are now delaying specialised vessels, disrupting LNG logistics, and exposing the weaknesses of Russian shipbuilding. Moscow has kept Arctic LNG exports moving through shadow-fleet tactics, domestic improvisation, and growing dependence on China. Beijing is providing markets, investment and industrial support, while gaining leverage over Russia’s Northern Sea Route ambitions.
