Water Crisis | Public Protector probes Bronkhorstspruit supply: Prof. Turton weighs in

The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis is raising serious questions about municipal water management after hundreds of residents became ill, following exposure to contaminated water.

Information presented to Parliament on Friday put the number of reported cases at 595, including 262 children under five.

Investigations have found that the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works operated without chlorination for about three weeks, while sewage pollution and failing infrastructure contributed to the risks.

The City of Tshwane has suspended the plant manager and also commissioned an independent investigation.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is also investigating the failures, while Parliament has questioned whether enough was done to protect residents.

To understand the technical failures, the wider implications for South Africa’s water infrastructure, and what needs to change, we are joined by Professor Anthony Turton, Emeritus Professor at the Centre for Environmental Management at the University of the Free State.
