Victory at last for Marikana platinum mineworkers

Marikana platinum mineworkers in the North West are now earning more than double the
R12 500 benchmark they fought for — 14 years after the August 2012 massacre of 34 mineworkers.

For workers, that figure represented a living wage, enough to afford decent housing and access credit facilities they had long been locked out of.

Lonmin Platinum Mine, at the time, agreed to a settlement committing to get all entry-level workers to R12 500 within 5 years.

That target was met in 2017.
