Update on Australia’s fuel security numbers: 18 April | ABC NEWS
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Energy Minister Chris Bowen say the nation has 46 days’ worth of fuel in reserves — that’s just under 2 billion litres of petrol and diesel.
There are currently 120 service stations — out of about 8,000 across the country — without diesel. “That’s 1.71% of service stations,” Bowen said.
There are also 61 cargo ships on the way to Australia and another 4.1 billion litres of fuel are under contract and scheduled to arrive in Australia in the next four weeks.
Bowen also announced that the government will extend the period that higher sulphur content is allowed in Australia’s fuel — a regulation change that allows petrol refined at Brisbane’s Ampol refinery to be diverted to the domestic market, instead of being sent overseas.
The rule, which allows the minimum standard sulphur level for unleaded petrol to rise to 50 parts per million (ppm) from 10ppm, will be in place until the end of September. There will then be a period from October 1 to December 31 where 50ppm fuel can continue to be blended.
