‘Unforced error’: Military expert on Trump’s S Korea decision

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States would reduce military exercises with key regional ally South Korea, just hours before they were due to get underway, citing his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Seoul’s lack of assistance with Iran.

South Korea has been a close American ally for over 70 years and the two nations have a mutual defense treaty, primarily designed to protect it from North Korea –– a burgeoning military power that now possesses nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Retired US Air Force Colonel Cedric Leighton reacts to Trump’s move, and former Pentagon official Sabrina Singh explains the significance of the US-South Korea defense alliance. Also, CNN international correspondent Gage Goulding has more details, and former US Ambassador to the European Union Gordan Sondland weighs in on Trump’s motives.
