Ukraine’s FirePoint may hold key to U.S. licensing Patriot production | Tymofiy Mylovanov

U.S. President Donald Trump refused his Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy’s pleas for the desperately needed Patriot interceptors, citing the U.S.’s own shortage of stockpiles. This comes as the promised Patriot-manufacturing license that Trump dangled in front of Zelenskyy at the NATO summit in Ankara seems to be nowhere closer to materializing.

“Ukraine says: ‘Listen, okay, forget about the missiles. Give us the license, and we’ll produce it ourselves. We actually have elements of this. We can develop a hybrid missile; give us some of the technology which is missing so we don’t spend years developing it, it will be months,’” Tymofiy Mylovanov, President of the Kyiv School of Economics and former Ukrainian Minister of Economic Development, summarized the situation from the Ukrainian perspective for TVP World. “Now the answer is from the United States: This is not possible as well.”

But as Ukraine and Europe are jointly working on their own interceptor project by Ukrainian defense company FirePoint, Kyiv may use the company as leverage. FirePoint’s products have already been used in the Middle East, and Washington appears to be interested in seeing the company form joint ventures with U.S. firms.

“And yet the company is currently working with Europeans,” Mylavanov said. “I think, for the company to come to the United States, (…) President Zelensky would expect (Patriot) licensing from the United States to come to Ukraine.”

Join TVP World’s Marie Kato and her guest as they explore the volatility of U.S.-Ukraine relations under the Trump administration, the prospects for ceasefire negotiations amid intensified Russian attacks, and the political and economic challenges facing Kyiv, from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s domestic support to the impact of strikes on Odesa’s port infrastructure and grain exports.
