France is facing escalating unrest as riots that began with student protests over school conditions spread beyond its borders into Spain, Italy and Portugal. What started as demonstrations over education and the cost of living has spiralled into a wider political crisis involving migration, public order and national leadership.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the “unbridled violence”, blaming ultra-left groups and vowing that those responsible for destruction, looting and attacks on the Republic would be held accountable. At the same time, pressure is mounting on France’s government, with rivals across the political spectrum demanding answers as violence intensifies.
Marine Le Pen has called the riots a threat to democracy, accusing Macron of lacking authority and credibility. In the United States, Donald Trump and JD Vance also weighed in, linking the unrest to immigration and warning of broader consequences for Western countries. Meanwhile, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg voiced support for the student-led protests, praising young demonstrators for challenging the system.
Since September 2026, students have been calling for better conditions in French high schools. By 17 October, peaceful marches had been overtaken by masked rioters and looters. More than 1,500 shops have been ransacked, damages have reached tens of millions of euros, more than 2,000 people have been arrested, and hundreds of police and emergency workers have been injured.
This report breaks down how the France riots began, why they spread, what key political figures are saying, and what it could mean for Europe next.
