Trail Running | Taking on different elements in tough trail runs


Ultra-distance athlete Ryan Sandes has just completed one of the most brutal endurance challenges on the planet, the Marathon des Sables in Morocco, widely regarded as the world’s toughest foot race.

Over six stages and approximately 270km through the Sahara Desert, athletes are required to run through extreme heat, shifting sand dunes, and harsh desert terrain while carrying their own food and gear, relying only on organisers for limited water and basic shelter.

Thando Mxoli caught up with Sandas about some of the different elements he has faced in 19 years of being a professional athlete.
